Think your retirement plan is safe? Think again
The American Thinker reports on the latest Democrat Congress thoughts about retirement funds, noting that:
"The Democrats have made a political living by scaring older Americans into thinking that the Republicans were going to take away retirement and Social Security from the elderly.
Maybe someone, somewhere, in the Republican Party should point out that the Democrats are planning something even worse."
The scheme that is being considered is that Americans would turn over their 401k dollars to the government who would then ration it out back to them on the government's schedule. "For example, a 55-year-old worker with $50,000 in a 401(k) account in August would swap out the $50,000 for a guarantee of $500 per month in retirement." Future retirees would contribute 5% of their income to the government plan, and the government would contribute $600/year. In both cases, the new plan would be managed by the Social Security Administration and the 401k payout would be added to the retiree's social security check.
So.....President Bush talked about privatizing social security which isn't working, and the new Democrat plan looks at governmentizing 401ks which are working. Wonder how long it will take fedzilla to spend the 401k trust fund just like they did the social security trust fund? Letter from John McCain
My Friends,
Throughout this election season, I've been reminded of the Yogi Berra quote, "It ain't over till it's over." My friends, I'm telling you today, this election is not over and we need everyone's hard work in the coming days to be victorious.
Voters in every state in the nation are energized and ready to win. But the Obama-Biden Democrats and their friends in the biased media want you to believe that it is over.
They are flooding every media market with television ads, radio ads and even 30-minute infomercials in an attempt to convince voters they are ready to lead. And frankly, voters aren't convinced.
Instead, the polls are tightening in important races across the country and it's now up to us to continue getting our message to undecided voters and elect our ticket from top to bottom next Tuesday.
Will you make an emergency donation of $25 or more today to our election efforts in important races across the country?
The Obama-Biden Democrats have a plan to "spread the wealth around" by raising your taxes in order to cut checks from the government for thousands of dollars to those who pay no income taxes at all. This is a handout of your tax dollars in what will amount to a new federal welfare program.
And if they take over the White House and hold or expand Congressional majorities, there's nothing stopping them. Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will get right to work, raising your taxes, allowing government bureaucrats to make healthcare decisions for your family and immediately withdrawing from Iraq causing unknown chaos in the Middle East.
And it's up to us to take the message of their real plans for America straight to every undecided voter. By making an immediate donation of $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or more to McCain-Palin Victory 2008, you will help fund our final ad buys of the campaign to make our case.
At a time when our economy is suffering, the last thing we will do is raise your taxes. We want to bring tax relief to hard working Americans. Unfortunately, those on the left are running false advertisements wrongfully claiming we'll tax healthcare and that's simply not true.
I'm asking for your financial support today to help us respond to attacks against our entire ticket. Any amount you can afford to give today will go a long way in helping our team in the final days leading up to Election Day.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
John McCain
P.S. Polls are tightening in races across the country and we need your support during the final days of the campaign. The Obama-Biden Democrats are blanketing media markets across the country with ads to convince voters they are ready to lead. They simply are not ready yet, and we need your immediate financial support to take this message to undecided voters in races across the country. How the Mortgage Crisis Happened
The “American Thinker” has published an excellent history of the mortgage crisis and how it happened, going all the way back to the 1930’s FDR New Deal thinking, then weaving through creation of mortgage-backed securities and expansion of the government sponsored enterprises which eventually became the purchasers of high risk mortgage loans. Both my husband and I worked in the banking and mortgage industries during much of this time and watched it all happen. It is a long read but a lesson on the seeds of socialism, spread over decades and is well worth the time to read it. We should take it as a warning against the furthering of more socialist programs. Message from McCain Campaign
We're now 12 days out from Election Day and I wanted to give you an important campaign update.
An Associated Press headline said yesterday that this race is "All even in the homestretch." All indicators point to this race coming down to the wire, so it's extremely important to reach out to undecided voters - the key to winning this election. The election is in your hands and I'm asking you to make the case to undecided voters for John McCain and Sarah Palin. Here's what you should tell them...
Instead of spreading wealth around, John McCain and Sarah Palin will spread opportunity.
Recently in Ohio, Senator Obama finally broke down and famously told "Joe the Plumber" that his economic plan is to, "spread the wealth around." Joe is working hard to realize the American dream, as are millions of other people who work hard, pay taxes and dream of owning a small business one day. Barack Obama will raise taxes on hardworking Americans to give a government handout to the 40% of Americans who pay no income taxes.
Thanks to "Joe the Plumber," voters are starting to see the clear difference between John McCain and Barack Obama on taxes. Joe's story is your story ... the story of hard work and the American dream. "Joe the Plumber" isn't just one man in Ohio ... it's every person in America with hopes, dreams and the desire to work hard with the opportunity to succeed.
John McCain and Sarah Palin have an economic plan that celebrates the American dream of opportunity, not government giveaways. In this country, we believe in spreading opportunity, for those who need jobs and those who create them. That's why their economic plan - Jobs for America - is so important for the American people in this time of economic crisis.
While Barack Obama is ready to "spread the wealth around," John McCain has a plan to get our economy moving so everyone has access to good jobs, a quality education and the opportunity to succeed.
John McCain and Sarah Palin don't just talk about change ... they deliver.
This election is certainly about change - there's no doubt about it. But that's why we're talking to voters about the difference between lower taxes and the opportunity to work hard for the American dream ... or higher taxes and government giveaways with Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
You can trust John McCain and Sarah Palin because they are the real deal; reformers with a record who stand by their words and will always put their country first.
Time and time again this team of mavericks has stood up, taken on tough issues and delivered. They're the real deal. They have a clear record that can deliver results, not just rhetoric that delivers votes.
In the last 12 days of this campaign, we want voters to hear the story of "Joe the Plumber" to understand the important differences between John McCain and Barack Obama. Please take a minute today to watch videos submitted to our "I'm Joe the Plumber" video contest to see how people all across America recognize that they too are Joe the Plumber. Then forward this message to your friends with a personal message about why you're like Joe the Plumber and why you are supporting John McCain and Sarah Palin on Election Day.
Thanks,
Rick Davis

Truth in Advertising
The Aiken Standard published an editorial criticizing negative politics and compared Republican ads about unrepentant terrorist William Ayres to Democrat ads about Bush ( and by extension McCain). The Obama Ayres association is the awful truth and much of the Bush bashing that has been a steady drumbeat from the liberal left for several years is in no way a moral equivalent. It is also true that Bush is not running for President. The following video from a documentary will give everyone the shivers. To read more follow this link Confederate Yankee
Government Money Grab
The Wall Street article published an opinion story today about “Argentina’s Property Grab” – how the Argentine president has announced that her government will seize the country private pension system to resolve its financial crisis. Here is an excerpt:
"If Congress approves this property grab, $30 billion in individually held retirement accounts -- think 401(k)s -- managed by private pension funds will become government property.
That the state could seize retirement savings no doubt seems outrageous to Americans. But it is a predictable development in a country where government intervention in the financial system is the norm. With Washington now expanding its role as guarantor in American banking, that's something to think about."
Many analyses of Obama’s financial proposals conclude that proposed new taxes will not cover the new expenditures. A democrat congress would support his money grab for pension dollars – which, by the way, the Clinton administration thought of doing via a “one-time”15% tax on IRAs. At this point, the only protection we would have is the Supreme Court who might rule that assets are not income. Thus taxing them would be unconstitutional, but that’s a big maybe. Here’s the article

'Change' Can Lead to Catastrophe

Telling a friend that the love of his life is a phony and dangerous is not likely to get him to change his mind. But it may cost you a friend.
It is much the same story with true believers in Barack Obama. They have made up their minds and not only don't want to be confused by the facts, they resent being told the facts.
An e-mail from a reader mentioned trying to tell his sister why he was voting against Obama but, when he tried to argue some facts, she cut him short: "You don't like him and I do!" she said. End of discussion.
When one thinks of all the men who have put their lives on the line in battle to defend and preserve this country, it is especially painful to think that there are people living in the safety and comfort of civilian life who cannot be bothered to find out the facts about candidates before voting to put the fate of this nation, and of generations yet to come, in the hands of someone chosen because they like his words or style.
Of the four people running for president and vice president on the Republican and Democratic tickets, the one we know the least about is the one leading in the polls — Barack Obama.
Some of Sen. Obama's most fervent supporters could not tell you what he has actually done on such issues as crime, education, or financial institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, much less what he plans to do to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear nation supplying nuclear weapons to the international terrorist networks that it has supplied with other weapons.
The magic word "change" makes specifics unnecessary. If things are going bad, some think that what is needed is blank-check "change." But history shows any number of countries in crises worse than ours, where "change" turned problems into catastrophes.
In czarist Russia, for example, the economy was worse than ours is today and World War I was going far worse for the Russians than anything we have faced in Iraq. Moreover, Russians had nothing like the rights of Americans today. So they went for "change."
That "change" brought on a totalitarian regime that made the czars' despotism look like child's play. The communists killed more people in one year than the czars killed in more than 90 years, not counting the millions who died in a government-created famine in the 1930s.
Other despotic regimes in China, Cuba, and Iran were similarly replaced by people who promised "change" that turned out to be even worse than what went before.
Yet, many today seem to assume that if things are bad, "change" will make them better. Specifics don't interest them nearly as much as inspiring rhetoric and a confident style. But many 20th century leaders with inspiring rhetoric and great self-confidence led their followers or their countries into utter disasters.
These ranged from Jim Jones who led hundreds to their deaths in Jonestown to Hitler and Mao who led millions to their deaths.
What specifics do we know about Barack Obama's track record that might give us some clue as to what kinds of "changes" to expect if he is elected?
We know that he opposed the practice of putting violent young felons on trial as adults. We know that he was against a law forbidding physicians to kill a baby that was born alive despite an attempt to abort it.
We know that Obama opposed attempts to put stricter regulations on Fannie Mae — and that he was the second largest recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie Mae. We know that this very year his campaign sought the advice of disgraced former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines.
Fannie Mae and Raines were at the heart of "the mess in Washington" that Barack Obama claims he is going to clean up under the banner of "change."
The public has been told very little about what this man with the wonderful rhetoric has actually done. What we know is enough to make us wonder about what we don't know. Or it ought to. For the true believers — which includes many in the media — it is just a question of whether you like him or not.

Obama Campaign Volunteer Email
A good Republican member of the Boy Scouts of America Fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega) at the University of Washington was "livid" when he received an email.from an Obama group. He sent the email and his comments to his Dad who lives in Aiken.
I'm Kady Dodds,Border State coordinator for Senator Obama's Campaign for Change in Colorado. I'm reaching out to Washington University 's Alpha Phi Omega chapter because we desperately need more team members on the ground here in Colorado . This is a critical swing state where we are working hard to engage with local voters on the issues that matter. If Barack can win back all of the Kerry states, just about every combination of states he needs to get to 270 electoral votes includes this state's 9. And Colorado is ripe for turning blue: While George Bush won Colorado twice, since 2004 we've elected a Democratic Senator, and both the State House and State Senate are now controlled by a Democratic majority.
"I am absolutely livid, yet at the same time excited that Obama’s supporters are so desperate! In the state where the Dem’s had their convention, they are trying to bring in students from other states to bolster their efforts because they think they’ll lose. (The part that makes me livid is that they used a non-profit, a-political organization’s email contact list to do this. I also have to laugh because they didn’t even get the name of the university correct!!!) It’s hard to say if they are endangering one more non-profit’s status because they didn’t learn from the big to-do over Obama’s church or if they just don’t care. Either way it makes me livid!
Thought you might like yet another example of how Obama’s supporters feel that the ends justify the means. Heard recently that Obama is preemptively playing the race card. Fred may have been my first choice, but attacking McCain’s integrity in this way doesn’t just cross the line, it obliterates it! This is just one more reason that Obama is just plain wrong for the Presidency!
Go McCain & Palin!

Hi,
I'm Kady Dodds,
With only 15 days left before election day, the race between Obama and McCain is dead even in Colorado (the polls have gone back and forth.throughout the campaign). Our current staffing levels do not allow us to meet our voter contact goals. The party with the most direct voter contact will win, period. We need to make sure that Barack Obama wins. No one wants to look back and wonder if he/she could have done more.
I would really appreciate it if you would forward this email to your members, and let them know that I am happy to answer any questions they may have about traveling out here to volunteer. Volunteers can sign up directly at ComeToColorado@gmail.com, or I can be reached by phone at 720-366-8906. **FREE HOUSING IS PROVIDED FOR EVERYONE COMING TO COLORADO** The deadline to sign up is this Friday, October 24th.
To get a feel for our operation here, please see our recruiting video at http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/oosco
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

Jim Wetzel urges Phonebanking for McCain
Dear friends,
I received the following email from Jim Wetzel and I urge you to follow his example. This election is very close and we all need to do everything we possibly can. Please follow the link in Jim's message and sign up. Our country cannot afford to have Obama and a Democrat controlled congress. I apologize to any of you who may prefer Obama. I don't know for sure who you are so I am mailing this to my entire list.
Dick Smith
FROM JIM WETZEL
“I have gotten satisfaction in doing something grass roots and effective by joining the McCain campaign phone bank. Click on this link http://www.johnmccain.com/dashboard and then select the phone bank button:to sign up.
After enrolling you will complete instructions for making calls to voters in a selection of states (I have selected North Carolina). The names and tel #s are served up one at a time in batches of 20 with a script for both calls and messages, and an after inquiry as to the outcome of the call. It is a neat self contained program. I have AT&T unlimited long distance so I don't have cost problem but they do have a link for getting you on to a paid for call program.
It would be great if we could get Republican Club members to join in. Everything to keep Obama out of the White House.
Have you wondered why Michelle Obama has been taken off the campaign trail? Ponder it.
OK? I have to make some calls.”

Aiken Republican Club Luncheon October 20th
Donna and I attended the Republican Club monthly luncheon today and were privileged to hear an excellent presentation from Ashley Landess , President of the South Carolina Policy Council. The main topic was a proposed law to require our representatives to record their votes rather than use the voice vote that makes it impossible for their constituents to know how they voted.
Our elected officials have hidden behind this procedure for too long and we must demand that they make our government processes more open. Unfortunately many of our representatives have opposed this legislation which has been supported by Governor Sanford and is also supported by Shane Massey our Senator from District 25 who is running for reelection.
Please contact your State Senator and State Representative and demand that they support this legislation. Several in our delegation had said they oppose the law because of the cost. They estimate that recording the votes would cost $55 per elected official for each vote. In this day of high tech electronics I have to believe that our representatives are simply looking for an excuse. Jane Vaughters and I have fought for more openness in city government and I urge you to do the same for the State.
Our elected officials would do well to heed the very wise observation of Thomas Jefferson that appears on the website of the South Carolina Policy Council.
“A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.”
Thomas Jefferson

Legality of Absentee Voting Locations
You may have read in the Aiken Standard about the controversy over Aiken County having satellite absentee voting locations in Kalmia Plaza, North August and Wagener. The paragraph below is an excerpt from the SC Code of Laws. Note the first sentence. It is amazing there is any question about where absentee voting can take place. This election is bound to be contentious. I hope the Secretary of State and Board of Elections will follow the exact letter of the law to avoid the throwing out of any ballots cast in good faith.
In each county there must be established an absentee voting precinct located in the office of the county board of registration. The county election commission, municipal election commission, county committee for each political party, or executive committee of each municipal party in the case of primary elections is responsible for the tabulation and reporting of ballots at the absentee voting precinct. The absentee ballots must remain in the custody of the county board of registration until transferred to the county election commission, municipal election commission, county committee for each political party or executive committee of each municipal party for the purpose of tabulation and reporting as provided in Section 7-15-420.

North of the Border
From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada (a very underground paper):
The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the
past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly. Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night.
'I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,' said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota . The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. 'He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?' In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. 'Not real effective,' he said. 'The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk.'
Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves. 'A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions,' an Ontario border patrolman said. 'I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. 'Th ey did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.'
When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to shoot wolves from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them for the Rapture.
In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers on Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney hits to prove they were alive in the '50s. 'If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence WelkShow, we get suspicious about their age,' an official said.
Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. 'I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy justcan't support them,' an Ottawa resident said. 'How many art-history and English majors does one country need?'

America as the Last Man Standing
September 28, 2008
America as the last man standing
"In a generation or two, the US will ask itself: who lost Europe?"
From a speech of Geert Wilders, chairman Party for Freedom, the Netherlands, at the Four Seasons, New York, introducing an Alliance of Patriots and announcing the Facing Jihad Conference in Jerusalem.
The speech was sponsored by the Hudson Institute on September 25. A brief quote from his remarks follows:
"I come to America with a mission. All is not well in the old world. There is a tremendous danger looming, and it is very difficult to be optimistic. We might be in the final stages of the Islamization of Europe. This not only is a clear and present danger to the future of Europe itself, it is a threat to America and the sheer survival of the West. The danger I see looming is the scenario of America as the last man standing. The United States as the last bastion of Western civilization, facing an Islamic Europe. In a generation or two, the US will ask itself: who lost Europe? Patriots from around Europe risk their lives every day to prevent precisely this scenario from becoming a reality."
The following film FITNA was made by Geert Wilders and was shown to the meeting before his speech.
Aiken County Open Land Trust has a New Name
October 13 City Council Meeting
WHISKEY ROAD ANNEXATION – The city recently received the Judge’s signed Court Order for the law suit initiated by the City with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. We are happy to say that the City was successful in this law suit with the Judge declaring that the annexation from Pine Log Road to Talatha Church Road was done properly and legally. Our Legal Department had confirmed that SCDOT cannot challenge the Whiskey Road Annexation Ordinance since no appeal has been filed within the 30 day period.
This has significance from two perspectives. First and most important it gives the City control of Whiskey Road which will allow us to be more aggressive in implementing more stringent traffic measures. We can now consider medians, turn restrictions, light synchronization and other measures to improve the traffic flow on Whiskey Road. Second, it permits annexation of properties along Whiskey Road. Where we have discretionary authority, I will generally oppose annexation unless it is in the clear interests of the City of Aiken. There are some properties which will be annexed as a result of previous agreements to furnish water service.
ENHANCED TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT UNIT GRANT AWARD – Governor Mark Sanford has notified us that we will soon be receiving $93,754 for our Enhanced Traffic Enforcement Unit. These monies are used for our Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (HEAT) Public Safety Officers who operate the black Dodge Chargers. Our HEAT Officers, CPL Chris Carter and PSO Jason Griffin are providing a valuable public safety service to our city.
CROSLAND PARK INITIATIVE – One of the major goals of the Council is the stabilization of Crosland Park. On October 2, 2008, city representatives met with six churches and several non-profit agencies to discuss strategy concerning the rebirth of Crosland Park. We are asking all the parties who sign the Memorandum of Understanding to join together to create a coalition which will help change the community. We believe by the purchase of homes and providing services to meet the needs of these citizens, we will be able to meet the greater needs of the Crosland Park neighborhood. Council will consider further actions to include sidewalks, street lighting, landscaping, and additional recreational opportunities. City Council will soon be asked to formally make a commitment to the programs needed in Crosland Park.
CITY PAVING SCHEDULE – Paving has been delayed two weeks. I was just notified about this delay on Monday, Oct 13.
PUBLIC SAFETY MONTHLY ACTIVITIES REPORT – I continue to be surprised by the large number of 911 calls that Public Safety deals with each month. Last month, for example, they received 2, 459 911 calls. Public Safety issued 950 traffic related tickets, completed 141 traffic accident reports, and arrested 300 people. Based on numbers alone, our Public Safety Department is providing outstanding service to our citizens. I would like to see more education to help prevent abuse of the 911 emergency call network. Public Safety is considering establishing a system to better communicate to the public the number and types of incidents it deals with. If you want some details, please look in the Annual Report I mentioned in my last email. It is also available at the city web site (http://www.aiken.net/).
NEW SPCA FACILITY AND DOG PARK – At our meeting on Monday, we will have the second and final reading on the new SPCA facility which will be co-located with the Dog Park.
JUNK CARS AND OVERGROWN LOTS – We will have a work session which will begin at 6:30 to discuss junk cars and overgrown lots. One of the City Council’s goals over the last few years has been to improve neighborhoods within our city. One of the frequently asked questions at neighborhood meetings is what can be done with overgrown lots and abandoned cars. At our work session, we will discuss our current codes concerning overgrown lots versus how other cities in South Carolina have been able to deal with these problems. Based on this discussion, City Council can decide whether to stay with our current procedures or modify them based on this information. Our current system for dealing with overgrown lots is a three step process which can take as long as 45 days. This system consumes too much staff time and creates a frustrating delay for neighbors. We will look at systems used by Spartanburg, Columbia, and Anderson. I expect we will reduce our maximum 45 day system for dealing with overgrown lots to a more reasonable 10-15 day time frame and make it easier to deal with repeat offenders.
With regard to inoperable vehicles, the process of identifying, contacting, and arranging for towing is a long one. It can take up to 35 days before an attempt is made to issue an Ordinance Summons for Livability Court and then several more weeks for the court date, decision, and implementation. It is in the interest of the neighborhood to remove vehicles that do not run and it is in the interest of the vehicle owner to have a fair process. Some jurisdictions provide a monetary incentive to car owners who participate in a voluntary removal program. The program is self-financing. The owner of an inoperable vehicle sells the title to the City for $75.00. The Public Works Department then tows the vehicle to a vehicle recycling facility and receives between $342 and $600 for the title. The City of Anderson has a program like this which we will discuss.
Please note that during a work session, City Council and the public can discuss an issue and provide staff with enough information to determine a suitable course of action. We do not vote or take any action whatsoever during a work session other than give general guidance to staff. City staff can then determine whether to place the items discussed at a future City Council meeting for action. I expect that we will deal with these two issues soon. We do have the authority, however, to add an item to the agenda providing it is approved by a majority of the Council. I am not sure this will happen to these two items, but it could.
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA – Keep in mind that City Council agendas are available on line. The agenda includes supporting documents that we review to determine a course of action. The link for Monday’s City Council agenda is http://www.aiken.net/weblink7/docview.aspx?id=82450.

Aiken County Republican Rally
Last nights old fashioned Republican Rally was a great success and a good time was had by all. The Aiken Standard reported on the event but unfortunately chose to use the word "dozens" to describe the attendance thereby giving the false impression that only a few Republicans turned out for the event. In fact there were around three hundred enthusiastic attendees. On the other hand the Augusta Chronicle also covered the event and gave an accurate, fair and balanced report.which is repeated below:
GOP hopefuls rally in Aiken By Michelle Guffey | South Carolina Bureau Friday, October 10, 2008 AIKEN --- Republicans in Aiken County were out in force Thursday night, showing their support for the Grand Old Party and its candidates on the November ballot.
"This is taking an opportunity to act on people's enthusiasm and excitement," said Dennis Saylor, the local party chairman. "We decided to have a rally to bring people together and let them know that the party's alive." Local Republican government officials and candidates running in the Nov. 4 election attended the rally, including U.S. Reps. Joe Wilson and Gresham Barrett and state Sen. Shane Massey and Greg Ryberg.
Mr. Wilson faces Democrat Rob Miller on the ballot for the 2nd Congressional District; Mr. Barrett is challenged by Democrat Jane Ballard Dyer in District 3; Mr. Massey faces Democrat Greg Anderson in state Senate District 25; and Mr. Ryberg is unopposed in District 24.
With the smell of barbecue wafting through the air and the sounds of the AAA Homeschool Band providing the dinner music, candidates milled through the crowd, shaking hands and politicking.
As the stock market suffered another day of losses, Mr. Barrett pleaded with the crowd.
"Please don't give up on the Republican Party," he said, telling the crowd it was time for the party to take off the gloves and to get back to its roots.
"When we get back to Washington, if we're going to get out of this, we're going to have to start calling out names," Mr. Barrett said.
Mr. Saylor said people seem to be taking an interest in the election, as evidenced by the increase of registered voters.
In Aiken County, registered voters rose from about 81,000 in January to more than 90,000 last week.

ACORN Voter and Registration Fraud
Last night a federal judge issues a temporary restraining order against Ohio's Democrat Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner for not following the state's registration laws in regard to the ACORN voting scandal. In short, the law requires that decentalized voting offices (there are about 85 of them in Ohio) must verify that a newly registered person is listed in some of the other state records - i.e. that they exist. Apparently, Brunner has not allowed access to these records and insists that the registrations stand without verification. This morning, Powerline quoted from a New York Post article that:
A man at the center of a voter-registration scandal told The Post yesterday he was given cash and cigarettes by aggressive ACORN activists in exchange for registering an astonishing 72 times, in apparent violation of Ohio laws.
"Sometimes, they come up and bribe me with a cigarette, or they'll give me a dollar to sign up," said Freddie Johnson, 19, who filled out 72 separate voter-registration cards over an 18-month period at the behest of the left-leaning Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

Acorn is Becoming a Major Issue
ACORN is rapidly becoming a major issue, and we hear that they are here in Aiken. All Americans should be outraged at this obvious voter/registration fraud and attempt to steal the U.S. presidential election. A new website has been created at and there is an online petition demanding investigation. You can access the petition either by visiting the website Stop Acorn or taking this direct link Acorn Petition

Sarah Palin-An expert on America's Energy Needs
The current version of Imprimis, a publication of Hillsdale College , has printed an adaptation of a speech by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin this past August. The Governor proves that she is an expert on America ’s energy needs and resources and how to match the two. The entire article can be found at http://www.hillsdale.edu/news/imprimis.asp
Here are some highlights, quoted or paraphrased from Palin’s message:
When Alaska was purchased from the Russians for two cents an acre in a deal known as “Sewards Folly” the agreement was that we pull our own weight. … Now we’re earning our keep, largely by tapping our energy resources such as crude oil and liquefied natural gas.
…. As we consider where our country’s energy will come from in the future, Alaska can and must be a big part of the answer. In fact, Alaska has already begun to take the lead on a sorely needed national energy policy. Groundbreaking history was made when Alaska ’s lawmakers voted to award TransCanada Alaska a license to proceed with…the building of a natural gas pipeline. Once constructed, this pipeline will supply four to four-and-one-half billion cubic feet of natural gas per day—roughly six percent of America’s demand.
Just to provide some perspective, Alaska has tens of trillions of cubic feet of natural gas under the surface, especially on the North Slope . Alaskans have longed for the right to access our gas and more of our oil to assist in supplying the U.S. market…This $30-40 billion infrastructure project—which will be built by the private sector—is one of the most exciting and progressive events in Alaska’s history.
This is a good start, but Alaska has much more to offer in the way of resources. And let me tell you clearly that we can do so in a way consistent with good environmental stewardship.
Because of the lagging economy, Americans do not have time for “all talk and no action.”
Alaskans find it incredibly frustrating that others—many of whom have never even set foot in our state, much less lived here—dictate how and when we can best use our own resources. Whether over the barren tundra or in our majestic mountains, we have a strong history of responsible development. To date, Alaska has sent more than 15 billion barrels of oil, safely and efficiently, to the lower 48. One look at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System illustrates that development and wildlife can and do coexist.
I’ve heard it said by some politicians that Alaska doesn’t have enough oil to make a difference. I can tell you honestly that we do have enough. And while consultants and experts debate the current energy crisis, Alaska is already preparing for its next role—providing American consumers with a safe and secure domestic source of crude oil and natural gas. In fact, if energy imports were curtailed completely, Alaska could provide our nation with seven years of crude oil independence and an eight-year supply of natural gas. These are numbers that reflect known and recoverable oil and gas deposits.
Congress can make it possible to take advantage of these resources right now, by streamlining access to offshore areas. As usual, outside interests are throwing up roadblocks and manipulating the legal system to achieve their agenda. But we need to bring some sanity back to the legal and permitting processes in the area of energy production.
In calling for bans to be lifted in order to get our nation out of the chokehold of high oil prices and dependence on the Middle East , I am certainly not rejecting the idea of alternative and renewable resources. I believe that we need to move in that direction, ultimately weaning ourselves off of fossil fuels. But we can’t do it overnight—or even over a decade.
We must open ANWR and lift the ban on offshore drilling. The science and technology to harvest our resources responsibly and safely are in hand. The time for congressional action and leadership is now.
I believe that, if elected, Senator McCain and Governor Palin will pursue a program to free American away from the economic drain and securoity vulnerability of dependence on foreign oil. If elected, Senators Obama and Biden will only deepen the current energy crisis.

Just Say No to Snopes!
I have used Snopes for several years and always felt it was reliable. Over the past several months during this interminable campaign season Donna and I have noticed that their political factchecking does tend to lean towards the liberal side.Accordingly I no longer depend on them. Someone forwarded me the following email today which confirms my suspicions.
"I've sensed and found leftist bias in Snopes on every political 'fact' I've checked with them. They call conservative-leaning documents 'false' but give very thin evidence to back up their claim. And they label liberal documents as true or unknown when there are clear outright falsehoods orders of magnitude greater than their filter for conservative documants. I have stopped using them."
Factcheck.org which is linked with the Annenberg Foundation demonstrates the same bias. The Annenberg Foundation also funded the Chicago Annenberg Challenge which was founded by unrepentant terrorist William Ayers and was at one time chaired by Barack Obama.
