Carl Langley Speaks Out

The following letter from local scribe Carl Langley appeared in the Aiken Standard today. To read the several comments made on his letter go here

How far do we go with diversity?

In the awful aftermath of the shooting deaths of 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, by a Muslim serving as a major in the U.S. Army, I was shocked at the words of the Army's top general, George Casey.

Gen. Casey's words, in which he declared that the shootings would not deter the military on its path to diversity, would have been better left unsaid. He should have spent his face time on television deploring the act of a mad man.
I watched with my mouth agape as Casey said diversity is building a strong society and a strong military. I ask him if diversity isn't now being given priority to building, training and maintaining the kind of military service needed to keep this country safe in a hostile world.

Gen. Casey should have limited his time to expressing his condolences to the families of those murdered and promising that the military would extact justice and retribution for this awful crime.

Watching Casey tap dance around the awful catastrophe at Fort Hood and go to mouthing the preachments of a society now being driven by liberal thought and speech at every level was too much for me.

I served in the Army long ago and am proud of my grandson who serves today as a captain in the same branch. I gave thanks that my grandson wasn't in the Fort Hood building that became a slaughterhouse.

While I agree that we have become a polyglot nation and must adapt to this changing world, promoting diversity is no excuse for the failure of Casey's army, or any other organization, to weed out those with religious and political agendas that drive most of them insane.

In the liberal world, conservatives, Tea Party protesters and those who disagree with the president and his administration are the real terrorists. Not so the Muslim radicals who are out to exterminate anyone who does not submit to Allah.

Because of this leap into diversity, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who coldly shot down and murdered 13 people, is being referred to as the "alleged shooter." Can you imagine that? Here's a man whose killing spree was witnessed by dozens, included among them the more than 25 he wounded, and he is referred to as the "alleged shooter."

Here is a classic case in which liberalspeak or legal speak takes precedence over the obvious facts.

Considering the current sad state of affairs in the American justice system, let me offer that the trial of Hasan will be a long time coming because of the Byzantine maze that has been built into the justice system, both inside and outside the military.

This Hasan case will be around for a long time. During the coming months and years he will be lionized by Muslim radicals around the world, even here in this country, as a hero who stood against the infidels. They will be aided by American news media, especially People magazine and the like, who will clamor for a chance to tell his story, complete with pictures. Today's seniors will be long gone before justice is done in this case, if ever.

But back to Gen. Casey. After listening to his comments about the killings of his soldiers, I am left wondering who he is taking his orders from and who is clearing his commentary. I must assume it is some bureaucrat in the Defense Department.

I am among those who believe that if diversity continues at the expense of common sense we are likely to lose our nation, the anchor of, for the time being, the free world.

Frank Gaffney: The Speech We Need

This is a terrific photo of President Obama. Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy suggests a speech for the President to deliver tomorrow night at West Point:

Frank Gaffney: The Speech We Need

President Obama's much-anticipated speech at West Point Tuesday night  constitutes an opportunity with the potential to be as strategically momentous as Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972.  Mr. Obama is in a unique position to tell the truth about the nature of the enemy we confront, not just in Afghanistan but worldwide, and thereby put the effort to defeat that enemy on a sound, coherent and supportable footing.  Will he rise to the occasion?More

Healthcare Comments by Jim Wetzel

The following letter from Jim Wetzel appeared in the Aiken Standard on November 26 .

Future looks poor for health care

Future looks poor for health care

The current controversy over the recommendation of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force as to breast cancer health care is only a harbinger of more serious consequences that might come to pass. I speak to the ominous shadow of medical care rationing cast by the Task Force that could come to fruition under the ObamaCare program.

That report is not about proper health care; it's about health care spending based upon what the panel considers to be life benefits versus costs in doing breast scans. In recommending the banning of mammograms for 40- to 50-year-old women, the report's data supports the conclusion that cases of breast cancer will go undetected in that group, to a consequence related to the individual case. If that consequence happens to be death from a lack of proper treatment, it puts money over the value of life and government as the arbiter of continued life.

This is serious because the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force is designated as a decisional participant in the ObamaCare scheme. On the basis of accounting exercises and impersonal assumptions, it will make recommendations, as it has done here, based upon costs and group data. The individual and his doctor will not be considered or even play a role. If a person dies because of their recommendations, it will be of no consequence to them; but the death will be of consequence to the person who dies and to his family and society.

The sum of this is that under ObamaCare, it is likely that if you are over 80 (even 70 if the health budget is tight), and you come down with an event that can't be cured with a couple of aspirin, you may find that you have crossed the government's cost-effectiveness line and be disqualified from further care.

The lesson is that if women under 50 can be scratched from mammograms at the whim of a health panel, a person over 80 with a bad health report and subject to the same whim, could find himself sliced from the rolls and made toast.

Honduras-Finally we are on the right side!

  Honduras's Democratic Solution

Why The Obama Administration Is Right To Support Sunday's Election

A BREACH has opened among those countries that have sought to resolve the political crisis in the Central American nation of Honduras. One group is focused on restoring democracy to the country, through support for a national election scheduled for Sunday. A second faction places priority on putting ousted president Manuel Zelaya back in office -- even though few Hondurans want him back and his legal term expires in just two months. To its credit, the Obama administration is leading the support for the democratic option, even though that means departing from its policy of seeking consensus with the region's big powers.
Elections have often been used to restore constitutional order in unstable countries; they brought a peaceful end to Augusto Pinochet's right-wing dictatorship in Chile and to the leftist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. In the case of Honduras, the election solution is particularly appropriate, since one had been scheduled before Mr. Zelaya was arrested and illegally deported from the country in June. The candidates for president were chosen by a legal and orderly democratic process, with high participation; the vote will be supervised by an independent tribunal also established before the crisis.
Polls show that Hondurans are eager for the elections to occur. They have little taste for Mr. Zelaya, who embraced the leftist populism of Hugo Chávez while in office and was trying to follow the Venezuelan's model for dismantling democratic institutions. Last month, Mr. Zelaya accepted a U.S.-brokered deal that endorsed the elections while providing for the Honduran Congress to vote on whether to restore him to office for the remainder of his term. Yet when he was not immediately returned to power, Mr. Zelaya repudiated the plan. Now he and his supporters claim the election must be regarded as illegitimate, because Congress will not vote on his status until next week. Hondurans understandably wonder whether Mr. Zelaya's intention all along was to disrupt a democratic process that will send him to a well-deserved retirement.
Unfortunately, Mr. Zelaya has the backing not only of Mr. Chávez and his satellites but also of governments such as Brazil -- with which the Obama administration hoped to forge a regional partnership. The lesson of the Honduran crisis is that the United States cannot always pursue such multilateralism and also support democracy. Too many Latin American governments are more interested in backing leaders who share their political inclinations than in upholding the rule of law. While loudly denouncing the "coup" against Mr. Zelaya, they have ignored the rigging of elections and the violent suppression of opposition by fellow leftists. In rejecting their attempt to nullify Honduras's democratic vote this Sunday, the Obama administration has taken a relatively isolated stance -- and a correct one.

The Great British Climate Fraud

Human Events has published an excellent piece on "Global Warming," The first few paragraphs are posted below including a link to the entire article. Please read it and pass it on. The Wall Street Opinion Journal Online also has an illuminating story. We have been Gored!

The Great British Climate Fraud
11/24/2009

It has been described as the "greatest scientific scandal of the modern age." The story broke last Thursday when a person unknown -- some say it was a hacker, others an inside-leak job -- broke into the servers at Britain's Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia and published at least 61megabytes of confidential data on a Russian website.

Despite efforts in liberal quarters to play the story down as a criminal issue of no great consequence, the blogosophere almost instantly recognized it as political dynamite: perhaps even the final nail in the coffin of Al Gore's increasingly expensive theory that the world is rapidly overheating due to Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW).

Why? Because the Climate Research Unit in the windswept fenlands of Eastern England -- together with its sister unit in the West of England, the Hadley Centre in Exeter, Devon -- is one of the primary information sources used by the UN's International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).more

Health care Overhaul?

What a difference six months — and a health-care overhaul proposal — can make! Just six months ago, the U.S Preventive Services Task Force, which works within the Department of Health and Human Services as a “best practice” panel on prevention, sounded a warning signal over a slight decline in annual mammograms among women in their 40s. In fact, they warned women of this age bracket that they could be risking their lives if they didn’t get the annual preventive exam (via HA reader Devil’s Advocate):

The downward trend, however slight, has breast cancer experts worried. Mammograms can enable physicians to diagnose the disease at early stages, often before a lump can be felt. “When breast cancer is detected early, it often can be treated before it has a chance to spread in the body and increase the risk of dying from the disease,” says Katherine Alley, medical director of the breast health program at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

The U.S Preventive Services Task Force, an independent panel of experts working under the Department of Health and Human Services, recommends that women older than 40 get a mammogram every one to two years. The task force finds the test most helpful for women between ages 50 and 69, for whom it says the evidence is strongest that screening lowers death rates from breast cancer. Other groups, including the American Medical Association, suggest a more rigorous schedule, saying the test should be done every year; insurers often pay for annual tests.

But experts say they are seeing gaps beyond two years in many cases. Carol Lee, chair of the American College of Radiology’s Breast Imaging Commission and a radiologist at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, says many women understand that they need to have a mammogram but don’t go back for repeat tests after the first one. In Bethesda, Alley said she has even heard anecdotal reports of breast cancer survivors forgoing recommended mammograms.

But today, that same panel says … never mind:

“We’re not saying women shouldn’t get screened. Screening does saves lives,” said Diana B. Petitti, vice chairman of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which released the recommendations Monday in a paper being published in Tuesday’s Annals of Internal Medicine. “But we are recommending against routine screening. There are important and serious negatives or harms that need to be considered carefully.”

Several patient advocacy groups and many breast cancer experts welcomed the new guidelines, saying they represent a growing recognition that more testing, exams and treatment are not always beneficial and, in fact, can harm patients. Mammograms produce false-positive results in about 10 percent of cases, causing anxiety and often prompting women to undergo unnecessary follow-up tests, sometimes-disfiguring biopsies and unneeded treatment, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

But the American Cancer Society, the American College of Radiology and other experts condemned the change, saying the benefits of routine mammography have been clearly demonstrated and play a key role in reducing the number of mastectomies and the death toll from one of the most common cancers.

“Tens of thousands of lives are being saved by mammography screening, and these idiots want to do away with it,” said Daniel B. Kopans, a radiology professor at Harvard Medical School. “It’s crazy — unethical, really.”

What changed in six months to change the USPSTF from a sky-is-falling hysteric on a 1% decline in testing to Emily Litella? If the administration gets its way, the government will be paying for a lot more of these exams when ObamaCare passes. That will put a serious strain on resources, especially since many of the providers will look to avoid dealing with government-managed care and its poor compensation rates.

The motivation for HHS will be to cut costs, not to save lives. The sudden reversal in six months of the USPSTF, especially after it made such a stink over a relatively minor decline in screening, certainly makes it appear that they have other priorities than life-saving in mind here.

One final thought. Barack Obama predicated his ObamaCare vision on the notion that increased prevention would save costs. Suddenly, his administration is for decreased screening and prevention. Could that have anything to do with the CBO scoring on screening? And what does that say about how government will make decisions once they control the compensation and care in the US?

Lou Dobbs Moves On

the following is the lead in to a powerful story concerning Lou Dobbs final telecast from CNN. The full report appears on the American Spectator.

I Was Lou Dobbs's Last Guest: Witness To a Star Reborn

"I got up here and I started to open my mouth and the long and powerful arm of Mr. James Taylor reached into this sacred chamber and grabbed me by the scruff of the neck." --Jimmy Stewart as U.S. Senator Jefferson Smith in the 1939 Frank Capra classic, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
"Vision is the art of seeing things invisible."-- Jonathan Swift

"You're speaking as though you believe America is a free country."

The speaker was longtime CNN journalist and commentator Lou Dobbs. Sitting across the table from him in the CNN studios in New York I was startled at the statement, a statement that was in fact a question. I was even more startled at what had transpired moments before -- when Dobbs, seated at another table a few feet away, an electronic American flag waving behind him -- looked America in the eye and announced he was leaving CNN after almost three decades. Without doubt I knew the reason for Dobbs' question more

Bring all involved in case to justice

The following letter appeared in the Aiken Standard today. Should you want to see the letter and any comments on the Aiken Standard web site go here  The letter was in response to the Aiken Standards excellent editorial regarding the Ginny Allen caper. Bring all involved in case to justice

I was astounded to read in the Aiken Standard today that the case of Ginny Allen, who has admitted her involvement in an election scam involving Senator Ryberg, Jason Whinghter, Tom Young and Scott Singer, was being handled in a pretrial intervention process. This matter has been under investigation for more than a year. The idea that Ginny Allen might be let off with an apology letter and some minor community service is unacceptable, unless she has cooperated fully with the investigators and named her co-conspirators. If so, their names must be revealed and they too must be charged.

The letter below from Dick Smith was published in the Aiken Standard on Dec. 18, 2008, and is included herein as it laid out the facts right after this event occurred. It appears to me that the political system might be protecting its own by letting Ginny take a cushioned fall for the more powerful culprits. Citizens are sick and tired of the games that politicians play, and there must be transparency in government. We have made some progress in Aiken but there still is a long way to go. If we are outraged by the duplicity of politicians in Washington, then we must address corruption in our own backyard. If he has not already done so the County Solicitor should demand the names from Ginny and publicly charge all the culprits so that some faith in government can be restored.

“Who was hurt by election calls?

“With reference to the editorial concerning election law violations I agree completely that “it is time that laws dealing with election mischief are dealt with as felonies.” However, I most emphatically disagree with your statement that the “intended result of the election-eve deception was not realized.” Except for Ginny Allen and her-up-till-now undisclosed co-conspirators none of us can know for sure what the intended result was. It should be quite clear to the objective observer that the only person hurt by this reprehensible ploy was Scott Singer. Certainly there was no chance it would in any way affect the outcome of the Whinghter-Ryberg race since the polls showed Ryberg with more than 70 percent of the voters backing him. Ginny Allen, as an astute political operative, certainly knew that a last-minute attempt to hurt Senator Ryberg would be a waste of time and money.

“The facts are that Senator Ryberg, upon learning about the fraudulent calls, immediately issued an angry statement denying any responsibility for them and denied supporting any candidate. Senator Ryberg also requested SLED to investigate. As a consequence of this angry statement many voters may have assumed that Scott Singer had sponsored the calls. To correct this misapprehension Senator Ryberg issued another statement on June 12, wherein he “declared his belief that the other candidate for office mentioned in the illegal call, County Councilman Scott Singer, was not involved in the phone call.” For some reason this statement was never published in the Aiken Standard. Meanwhile critics used this spurious charge to cut into Singer’s well deserved good reputation and high favorability ratings.

“I for one am glad SLED has investigated and is continuing to investigate this matter. Let us wait until all the facts are in before we rush to judgment as to the effectiveness of the calls. – Dick Smith”

It is obvious the only candidate who could have been hurt by this illegal act was Scott Singer, and the only one who could have benefited was Tom Young. Since Tom Young denies any involvement we should take him at his word, but it is entirely possible that without his knowledge one or more of his supporters worked with Ginny. It is interesting to note that Ginny’s letter of apology only explicitly absolves Senator Ryberg. Aiken’s citizens deserve to know the truth.

So now after a year, the citizens and voters of Aiken need to know the facts of this case and be assured that “business as usual” politics will no longer be tolerated in Aiken.

Abandoned Under Obama

Earlier this month, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, a self-described "Muslim Zionist," traveled to the U.S. to address audiences in New York City and at Yale University. Publisher of the largest English-language weekly newspaper in Bangladesh, Choudhury has been jailed, beaten, nearly blinded, and is now on trial for his life for his reporting, and for his pro-American, pro-Israeli views.

It's The Jihad, Stupid

Frank Gaffney: It's The Jihad, Stupid

Poll after poll indicates that official Washington is held in very low regard by the American people.  One reason is that our leaders are seen as out of touch with the realities confronting ordinary folks - and with what those folks' common sense suggests are appropriate responses to such realities. There could scarcely be a more graphic example of that disconnect - and its ominous implications - than the contortions the U.S. government is now going through in the wake of the murder of 13 people and the wounding of dozens more at Fort Hood last week.  For example, the FBI declared immediately after the attack that it was not an act of terrorism.  Other officials are promoting the idea that it is simply a case of an individual afflicted by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or deranged by the prospect of an upcoming deployment to a war zone.  President Obama insists that we should reserve judgment, evidently because the facts are open to varying interpretations.

On the road to destruction?

The following excellent letter appears in the Aiken Standard today. Check out the mostly stupid comments on line here

On the road to destruction?

President Obama promised to unite the country and the world and to provide the most transparent administration in history. Americans were deceived because since his election, he has scorned our allies, broken promises to Eastern Europe and negotiations with drug companies and health insurance industry have been behind closed doors.

Obama rushed through the stimulus bill with such speed even congressional Democrats admitted they didn't read it before signing it.

He promised that the stimulus bill would prevent unemployment from surpassing 8 percent and save our economy. Instead, the current unemployment rate is 9.8 percent nationally and rising. Unemployment in the African-American community is even worse and tops 25 percent in many large cities. Obama's economic adviser, Christine Rohmer, said recently that we've seen all the benefit we're going to see from the stimulus package. If that's the case, why don't they return the 80 percent of the stimulus money that hasn't been spent to the American taxpayer?

The economy is still floundering and should commercial real estate foreclosures hit the economy in early 2010, America may slip into a depression. In addition, a recent report by the Associated Press indicates that the Obama administration has deceived Americans by claiming that the stimulus saved or created many more jobs than it actually has. The Associated Press progress report on Obama's economic recovery plan found that jobs were overestimated by thousands and that the number of jobs saved or created were counted two and sometimes four times while other jobs were credited to stimulus spending when none were produced.

The Obama administration governs by deception. They've lied about the stimulus, they've lied about the health care reform bill and cap and trade bill, which will increase taxes for all Americans and further damage what is left of our economy.

They've lied about the profits earned by financial, insurance and drug companies. They've lied about permanently defunding ACORN. Democrats are considering extending the defunding through Dec. 31, but won't permanently defund ACORN. In addition, the Democrat controlled Congress is looking for a "must pass" bill to which they want to attach a deficit increase amendment which will allow them to increase our national debt from the current $11 trillion to $13 trillion.

In short, there is little or nothing about the Obama administration and the Democrat Congress which Americans can believe, except that we, as a nation, are on the road to destruction while being told one lie after another. s

Going forward, our message must be We Stand Together! We are standing together, and Congress needs to see we are entire grassroots army that is mobilizing to protect this great country!

A Patriot reminded us this week that on 9/11 it was amazing to see Americans standing together. Think back to that time and remember how moved we all were by the American spirit and resolve. We must stand shoulder to shoulder. We must stand strong! Together, we can do this. It is not over yet!

Please send this alert to everyone you know! Tune in and tell your friends, family and neighbors. The more people fighting this battle, the more effective we will be.

God Bless You All and God Bless America!!

If you have any questions or need any additional information, send us an email and we will get back with you right away.

Frank Gaffney: Finally, A Coup In Honduras

Healthcare Humor!

Doesn't get any better than this!

Let me get this straight.

We're going to pass a health care plan
Written by a committee whose head says he doesn't understand it,
Passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it,
Signed by a president that also hasn't read it, and who smokes,
With funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't  pay his taxes,
Overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and
Financed by a country that's nearly broke.
What possibly could go wrong?
