Thank You Aiken Standard
Thank you Aiken Standard for making letters to the editor easily available on line. You have a very fair policy on publishing letters and they need to be available to online readers. I recommend checking out the several interesting letters appearing in todays paper. Just click on the title of this posting to read them all and make comments if you want to.
Pete Seaha reponds to Augusta Democrat Chair Lowell Greenbaum
The following letter appeared in the Augusta Chronicle a few days ago:
"The letter written by Lowell Greenbaum (Choice of Sarah Palin is truly appalling 9/5/08) is in fact much more appalling than the nomination of Palin as Vice President.
When you compare Sara Palin to Barack Hussein Obama, here's what you find. Panil was a City Council member, Mayor and now Governor of Alaska. Obama was an organizer in the Chicago slums, a State Senator and now a US Senator. Actually, Palin has more executive experience to be President than Obama.
Palin fought corruption and won, Obama joined corruption in Chicago getting millions of dollars in grants for his friend Tony Rezko. While Palin would fight terrorism, Obama befriended terrorist William Ayers who bombed our Capital and numerous banks in the 60's. Palin would fight communism while Obama admits, in his book, that his childhood mentor was a Communist named Frank Davis. There's also Obama's adult mentor, the Rev. Wright who for twenty years has preached racism, bigotry and a hatred of America to Obama and his family.
While Palin has no military service, I defy Mr. Greenbaum to tell us what branch of the service Obama served in. And, when it comes to looking Vladimir Putin in the eye I"d rather is was the "barracuda" than the "capitulator."
In the final analysis Greenbaum is right, Palin is no Hillary Clinton, she's much better and as far as Obama is concerned, the only thing he is qualified to run is his mouth."

City of Aiken Referendum
The Aiken Standard reports tonight that the current partisan election method will remain in place. Thank goodness. I don't have the numbers yet but I am sure they will be published in the morning. Indications are that the turnout was very low. UPDATE- Turnout was only 8 percent and 71 percent said no to the change. A very sad showing but the right conclusion.

In Aiken, the Democrats and the GOP rarely come together, but the two stood at a podium Sunday to talk about a vote they both have a stake in.
On Tuesday, a local referendum will ask City of Aiken residents whether they want to switch from partisan elections to nonpartisan. Sunday, both major political parties stood together hoping to stop the change.
Aiken City Council members decided to let voters make the final decision on whether the City should do away with party-affiliated elections in February.
"This is one of those rare times we stand together in opposition," John Brecht, chairman of the Aiken County Democratic Party said. "We oppose any attempt to do away with partisan elections for City Council seats."
"Aiken has prospered under the two-party system because one party has always served to check the excesses of the other," Dennis Saylor, Aiken County Republican Party chair said. "Whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent, I urge you to oppose this misguided referendum and vote no."
The ordinance states an effort by City officials to encourage more citizens to participate in local government as one of the reasons for holding the election.
Both chairmen disagreed with this, claiming the opposite was in fact true, and that this change could also have a negative impact on voter turnout.
"For whatever reason, many voters cast along straight party lines," Brecht said. "This option would be eliminated and would discourage voter participation."
The question on the ballot will read: Shall the municipality of Aiken amend Chapter 14 of its city code to change its method of elections of members to City Council from partisan elections with a primary to a nonpartisan general election?
